Mismanagement & misconceptions
Visitors are misled to believe that Laniakea is an official turtle viewing spot when in reality it is a small beach with no management, no parking, and no bathrooms.
Laniakea beach is not managed by anyone as a tourist attraction.
The beach is too small to accommodate both tourists and turtles with enough space for the turtles to rest.
The beach suffers both seasonal and progressive severe erosion. The amount of dry sand for turtles to rest on is less than it used to be.
There are no official entry points to the beach. Tour busses drop people off on the side of the road to climb down rocks.
Turtle Bay, a well-managed resort, and “Turtle Beach” are not the same.
Turtles used to rest on this once quiet beach without being surrounded by people.
Laniakea is not a beach park.
There are no bathrooms or showers.
The city does not pick up trash left by visitors.
Strong currents are dangerous along with large surf in the winter.

“Parking” at Laniakea is a small unpaved area alongside a busy highway.
Many visitors, including tour vans, end up parking in the No Parking zones.
It is dangerous for cars to back up onto the highway to leave.
Numerous parked cars have been broken into.
